Stairs with Purposeful Planting

This project blends practical access with ecological intent, creating a naturalistic staircase that gently follows the contours of the land from the home down to the owner’s vegetable garden. More than just a pathway, the stairs were designed to integrate into the landscape while encouraging birdlife and pollinators into the garden space.

Beside the deck, we created a striking mass planting of tall Kangaroo Paw Anigozanthos flavidus, providing vertical colour and texture with long seasonal flowering. This transitions into a sweeping bed of low-growing Grevillea and Banksia - selected for their bird-attracting qualities and drought tolerance.

A bird bath was positioned thoughtfully along the staircase, offering a water source and natural pause point for birds and insects. Together, these elements turn a simple staircase into a pollinator corridor and habitat feature, linking the home to the productive garden below in a way that feels grounded, lush, and full of life.
